I just discovered a new app called Tangerine through TUAW. It analyzes the bpm and "intensity" of your iTunes library. You can then make playlists that contain music with whatever bpm and intensity you want. It is a really cool program. You also get to select the length of the playlist and the pattern (ramdom, or if you want it to build and slow down, etc.) It's a beta program and I think it still has some bugs because it is saying that the song Lullaby from the Curious George soundtrack is 179 bpm which I think might be wrong. The good news is that the beta is free. The bad news (for a lot of you) is that it's only for Mac. It's really fun, I recommend checking it out.

I do hope they figure out how to port this to Windows. I've used bpm-based playlists on linux and it's really good for generating exactly this type of playlist.

Well, what do you know... The times are changing.
Now it's Windows users who complain about programs not being made for their platform.
Oh dear.

I haven't been able to run this app successfully, it hangs up every time (maybe it still can't handle large libraries). Plus, it seems it won't analyze music purchased through the iTunes Store.
Both issues are acknowledged in the dev's blog linked in the article.

Great app...I've been having fun with it since downloading, trying out different combinations and possibilities. So far, I've great a great workout playlist! That has always been a pain is the @ss...I usually ended up with the same bunch of songs over and over. Tangerine pulled out some winners that I hadn't even thought of, but sure enough...they fit perfectly.
